The call was made and the Northwest Texas Conference answered.
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the NWTX Deploy Minsitry Team asked the Conference to collect health kit supplies for the United Methodist Committee on Relief. The kits would be sent to Haiti.
Collection sites were set up throughout the Conference and the donations poured in.
Claude McKiddy and his son, Jeremy, got the Mission in Motion trailer and picked up supplies at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Lubbock. The supplies included items from the Midland area as well as 1,000 kits from First UMC in Lubbock.
The McKiddys headed to First United Methodist Church in Plainview then on to St. Stephen’s UMC in Amarillo.
At St. Stephen’s, Sharon Tunnell and staff had sorted, packed and sealed boxes from the Amarillo area including 100 kits from Boys Ranch.
The McKiddys then drove to Vernon.
In Vernon, the Rev. Gene Weinette and volunteers from Wellington UMC arrived to take the trailer to Abilene, where they picked up 60 boxes including $1,000 in health kit supplies from McMurry University. The Wellington congregation collected an offering for gas and lodging for the trip.
In Abilene, Susan Mouser and others had the supplies ready to go.
The Wellington group then headed to the Sager Brown Depot in Louisianna, made the delivery and headed back home.
"This was truly a team effort," said Ava Berry, NWTX Director of Mission and Administration. "I’d like to challenge every church to continue to collect the items needed for the health kits (don’t assemble the kit and don’t buy toothpaste), bring your collected supplies to Roundup Aug. 7 in Lubbock and lets take another full trailer to Sager-Brown."
An estimated 4,000-5,000 kits were delivered.
"We give God thanks for every donor and volunteer who made this possible," Berry said.
A Conference Mission Team will travel to Sager Brown in August to work for a week at Sager-Brown. Anyone interested in going is asked to contact Berry at the Conference Service Center, (806) 762-0201, ext. 16.
