McMurry recognized for student success

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University has been named to Washington Monthly’s National Top 100 Baccalaureate Colleges for its commitment to student success.

The  Washington Monthly list rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

McMurry’s President, Dr. John Russell, commented that, “A rating that recognizes the number of first-generation and low-income students who choose McMurry and succeed here is an interesting testament to what we do. That the award also reflects our students’ engagement in service to something bigger than themselves, makes the recognition seem even more appropriate.”

McMurry ranked at #66 on the national list and was one of only three Texas schools listed in its category of baccalaureate colleges.

The Washington Monthly editors explained their methodology in the story. “When we decided to rank master’s and baccalaureate institutions for the first time this year, we avoided U.S. News’s regional categories. We also, of course, evaluated the schools based on our own criteria (service, social mobility, and research) rather than those of U.S. News (fame, exclusivity, and money). Not surprisingly, there are some big differences between the results.”
